President Uhuru: We chose life

Image
The government chose life over the economy as regards the ravaging coronavirus pandemic, President Uhuru Kenyatta ( pictured ) has said. Stringent measures imposed by the government e.g curfew, closure of business establishments, cessation of movement in Nairobi and Mombasa counties last year and partial lockdowns contributed largely to a dwindling economy and harsh economic effects like unemployment. According to the president, when push came to shove, it was necessary to make a ‘bold decision’, a move that cost Kenya billions of shillings but preserved life. “The logic here, for the last one year, was that you can always revive the economy, but you cannot revive a lost life,” he said in a national address on Friday. his is the price we had to pay in 2020 for the bold decisions we made to contain this economic free fall. The opportunity cost of saving lives was the foregoing of Sh560 billion of GDP in order to preserve life. It was worth every cent,” he added. Official data reveals th...

Politics, intrigues of the handshake In Kenya

Image
The handshake intrigues deepened yesterday as a planned joint consultative meeting aborted.   Intrigues have emerged pitting associates of President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM’s Raila Odinga, questioning the parties’ commitment to the Handshake and its nine-point agenda. Senate Minority Leader Mutula Kilonzo Jnr yesterday told The Standard that there was no follow-up on the resolutions of February 24 that set today’s third anniversary of the Handshake to be a joint consultative meeting between MPs and county leaders on the BBI process. ‘’The party leaders’ meeting failed to co-opt the parliamentary leadership and that of the counties and there was no follow-up to firm up this date. From where we sit there is no meeting. We’ve not discussed it in the House and no one has received formal invite and as a result, senators have travelled out of town,” said Kilonzo Jnr, the Wiper Party vice-chair.

Why Raila no longer sits pretty in the Handshake Kenya

Image
The entry of Baringo Senator Gideon Moi and ANC leader Musalia Mudavadi into the BBI train might be causing jitters among  allies of ODM chief Raila Odinga . The unease, as alluded to by Siaya Senator James Orengo and Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo in their remarks about State interference, points to a Handshake partner worried of forces trying to outsmart him. Initially, not in the Handshake agreement between President Kenyatta and Raila, Gideon and Mudavadi are now on the train. To Raila’s allies, Gideon, whose party Kanu has a pact with Jubilee Party, and Mudavadi, who is a member of the National Super Alliance (Nasa) outfit, are not direct beneficiaries of the Handshake but are roped in on the basis of their alliances.
